What is VoIP?
Beyond the Hype...
For a technology hyped as much as VoIP is, many people don't understand how it can affect their own communications environment. While we won't attempt to offer an exhaustive survey of VoIP technology here, we'll try to hit a few high points.
VoIP = Voice over IP
Very simply, VoIP refers to taking voice data and breaking into digital packets that can be sent over data networks. Traditionally, voice communications between two locations were analog in nature and took place over, in essence, a long pair of copper wires. Switches in phone company offices provided the connectivity to create the link. Long distance calls, quite literally, took place over long runs of copper wire. Even as telephone companies became more electronic, the technology in the home or office didn't change much.
Computers have used Internet Protocol (IP) communications for years, and it has emerged as the dominant standard for data transmission. VoIP turns voice into the same kind of IP data that can travel inside a building, to other locations over dedicated links, or even over the Internet to any location in the world. IP is infinitely flexible, and allows very low transmission costs.
