IP Centrex
Outsourcing your phone switch
One of the newest buzzwords in the Voice over IP (VoIP) industry is "IP Centrex". This phrase builds on the much older "Centrex" idea, which eliminated an organization's on-site phone switch by keeping that technology in the phone company's central office (CO). Indeed, the name "Centrex" is a composite of "central office exchange service", implying that the "PBX", or phone switch, is located at the phone company.
IP Centrex is a slightly similar concept: instead of requiring a phone switch on site, all of the switching functions take place at the VoIP provider's facility. This allows sophisticated phone functions, easy connection of multiple remote offices, etc.
In the old days of conventional Centrex, one of the disadvantages was that the typical phone was a plain handset with only the normal numeric buttons - functions had to be accessed by combinations of button presses. Today's IP Centrex allows connection of a sophisticated IP phone with the system - this allows every function to be programmed, making the Centrex IP phone as powerful as any conventional switch-based phone.
