Windows XP Arrives in Michiana
Mishawaka, IN. The long awaited debut of
Windows XP arrived, and most feedback from reviewers is positive.
XP is being praised for its reliability and ease of use features,
although so far it isn't offering better speed than Windows
2000. In the early reviews, here are some of the most commonly
identified pros and cons:
Pros
- More reliable, fewer crashes than Windows 95/98/ME
- Easier switching between users for shared computers
- Easier home networking
- Better user interface
Cons
- More resource intensive - Microsoft recommends PCs built
in 2000 or later; at an absolute minimum, should have at least
300 - 500 mHz processor, 128 MB RAM
- Older software that requires DOS won't run
- It's not a free upgrade - Windows XP must be purchased to
upgrade older machines
What are Michiana area firms doing about XP? To date, most
are evaluating XP that has arrived on recently purchased PCs,
or that they have purchased in small quantities for testing
purposes. While the potential for reducing user crashes (and
the resulting support costs) is appealing, most firms are moving
slowly at first to assure themselves that the reported stability
of XP is actually there. Based on results to date, a few firms
are beginning to set goals for conversion of all user desktops
to Windows 2000 or XP; others are content to take a "wait
and see" approach as XP machines trickle into their facilities.
Stay tuned for updates on Windows XP and its progress into Michiana
businesses.
